Ultimately, it seems it is a software bug. But I think I will make another trip to the Apple Store to see if I can get them to exchange the one that is failing. For now I have disabled automatic mic detection and only use the one that works well. Now one of the ear pieces is having the same issue and the other is working perfectly. I went to the Apple store and they exchanged the earpieces for new ones. In any case it was impossible to have a conversation with using the AirPods. This problem was showing on both ear pieces but with different level of severity one microphone was almost not working at all. Once the microphone is enabled it works normally until there is a silence of about two seconds and then the problem starts all over. The problem seems to be automatic gain control has a weird delay where you need to be talking for a second or so for the AirPods to enable the microphone. I am having issues with my first gen AirPods.
